Johannesburg just hosted the most attended golf event in South African history, and 100,000 fans turned up to watch one of the most dramatic finishes the sport has seen all year. LIV Golf came to Steyn City, and South Africa will never look at professional golf the same way again.

He put his drive in the muddy rough on the playoff hole, took relief from temporary water, and then hit a fairway wood to 12 feet for a birdie that ended Rahm's challenge and kept the trophy out of South African hands by a single stroke. One shot. That is the margin by which history slipped away from the Southern Guards.

The easy narrative is to call it a collapse. Do not buy into that. The Southern Guards shattered the previous LIV Golf team scoring record alongside the Crushers and Torque GC, all three teams beating the old mark of 69-under. This was not a failure. This was a group of South African golfers competing at the absolute top of the game on the biggest stage. They should be celebrated, not mourned.

What This Event Means for Golf in South Africa

Here is the argument that needs to be made loudly: LIV Golf bringing a tournament to Johannesburg is the single most important thing to happen to professional golf in South Africa in a generation. A hundred thousand spectators over four days. Think about that number. South African golf has always punched above its weight in terms of the talent it produces, from Gary Player through to Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, right through to the current generation of Oosthuizen, Burmester and Schwartzel. But the local game has never had a flagship event that matched the quality of what the country produces. LIV Golf South Africa changed that in one weekend.

The sceptics who say LIV is just a Saudi money vehicle with no soul should have been in Johannesburg last week. When DeChambeau holed his birdie putt on the playoff hole, the crowd reaction told you everything. These were not hired spectators. These were genuine golf fans who had waited years for a world-class event to come to their doorstep. LIV delivered it, and the atmosphere delivered right back.

With the Masters at Augusta National coming up on April 9, DeChambeau now arrives as arguably the hottest player in world golf. His fifth LIV title puts him in elite company alongside Joaquin Niemann and Brooks Koepka. Rahm, for his part, is playing some of the best golf of his career and moved back inside the top 50 of the world rankings on the back of recent form. The Masters is going to be something special this year, and South African fans now have context for just how good these players are, having watched them up close.
